The Lewis Creek Association (LCA) is a non-profit conservation organization that does sustainability and conservation work in the towns of the middle Lake Champlain Valley. LCA seeks an intern for the winter months to assist with an education/outreach grant involving stormwater and optimal conservation practices, which will help landowners determine ways to improve water quality in their neighborhoods, and will help connect them to the land and water near them. The intern will be involved with initial meetings with the project team (which includes Lake Champlain Committee, engineering firm SLR, and Lake Champlain Sea Grant) (December 2021-January 2022), then will be responsible for helping reach out to landowners to three pre-identified neighborhoods with documented water quality improvement needs. This will include using the Vermont Parcel Viewer data to obtain names and addresses of landowners in the neighborhoods, and helping to mail letters to these landowners. The project team will be setting up a field trip in each of the neighborhoods (likely during the summer-fall of 2022, dates to be determined), which will include an expert (such as a fish biologist who can speak about the effects of sedimentation from road runoff on local fish populations, and can show landowners the fish that live in their nearby stream). The intern will be responsible for attending, and helping to film the events for those who can't attend. There may be additional opportunities for the intern to get involved with other water quality or biology-related projects over the spring and summer.
Pay is $20/hr for up to 71 hours total, part-time, temporary. We are flexible with your work schedule for the most part; much of the time (obtaining names and addresses) can be done on your own time, but should be completed by March-April. We will try to schedule meetings and events around your schedule to make it easy for you to attend, but you should ideally be available in Vermont in the fall of 2022 in order to attend events.
Please reach out to Kate Kelly, LCA Program Manager, at lewiscreekorg@gmail.com or (802) 488-5203 with questions. To apply for the internship, please send your resume, contact information for two professional references, and a brief cover letter to Kate Kelly at lewiscreekorg@gmail.com. The cover letter should explain your interest and specific qualifications (detailing your past experience working with GIS and/or Excel to obtain and organize data, your ability to work independently and complete work on a specific timeline, and experience interacting with the public/working as part of a team). Deadline for applications is December 20, 2021.
